Jermall Charlo came back to the scale a second time Friday afternoon and got it right.
Charlo officially weighed in at 160 pounds, the middleweight limit for his 12-round title defense against Juan Macias Montiel on Saturday night in Houston. The 31-year-old Charlo weighed 160.4 pounds the first time he stepped on the Texas Combative Sports Program’s scale.
Charlo took slightly more than one hour of the two-hour allotment to lose the extra weight. Had he not returned to the scale at 160 pounds or lower, the Houston native would’ve been stripped of his WBC middleweight title.
That title would’ve been at stake for Montiel even if Charlo couldn’t make weight because the Mexican challenger came in at 159.5 pounds on his initial trip to the scale.
Charlo’s weight ordeal aside, he remains an enormous favorite versus Montiel, the WBC’s fourth-ranked contender for Charlo’s championship. The William Hill sports book has established Charlo (31-0, 22 KOs) as a 33-1 favorite to beat Montiel, who has won only by knockout as a professional (22-4-2, 22 KOs).
The Charlo-Montiel match will headline Showtime’s three-bout broadcast from Toyota Center, the home arena of the NBA’s Houston Rockets.
Another fighter scheduled to box on Charlo’s undercard, Aaron Alameda, still didn’t come close to making weight when he returned to the scale Friday afternoon.
Mexico’s Alameda officially weighed 123.4 pounds for his 10-round, 122-pound fight against Angelo Leo. Alameda (25-1, 13 KOs), a southpaw, weighed 123.8 pounds, almost two full pounds above the contracted limit, the first time he weighed in.
The 27-year-old Alameda paid financial penalties to Leo and the Texas commission for failing to make weight. Albuquerque’s Leo (20-1, 9 KOs), a former WBO junior featherweight champion, made weight when he first came to the scale at 122 pounds even.
Showtime still will televise the Leo-Alameda match as the opener of a tripleheader set to start at 9 p.m. EDT.
