A deal is nearly complete for Billy Joe Saunders to make a defense of his WBO super middleweight world title against Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.

The fight would take place on May 2 in Las Vegas, as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend.

According to Jamie Conlan of management company MTK Global, who guide the career of Saunders, the two sides are on the same page and a finalized deal is very likely.

Eddie Hearn, who promotes Saunders, confirmed last week that offers were received for Saunders and WBA champion Callum Smith - but both boxers were not satisfied with the terms.

In his last fight back in November, Canelo jumped up by two weight divisions to challenge WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev. The Mexican star knocked him out in eleven rounds. Canelo has since vacated the title and most expect him to settle his career at 168-pounds.

"It is getting very likely that it will get done," Conlan told Sky Sports.

"We just negotiated better terms. Billy Joe is in the pole seat. We believe everyone is on the same side in terms of what fight needs to be made.

"It's highly likely that the fight will be made. There are still some issues to be ironed out. Both fighters want it, both camps want it, everyone seems to be on the same side, we just have to hit the right number. They gave an initial deadline but the negotiations are at a point where there is no point backing out now. We're nearly there.

"He believes he has the style to beat Canelo. Everyone at MTK believes he has the style to beat Canelo. It's an interesting fight - the biggest of his career, the biggest of his life. We just need to make sure everything is right from his side."
