Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom is hoping to officially announce the super middleweight clash between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and John Ryder in the coming days.

Last year, Canelo moved up to the light heavyweight division and suffered an unexpected decision loss at the hands of WBA world champion Dmitry Bivol.

Canelo bounced back a few months later, when he dropped back to 168-pounds to secure a twelve round unanimous decision in his trilogy fight with Gennadiy Golovkin.

The Mexican superstar is now planning to return to the ring in front of his countrymen, for the first time in 12 years, on Cinco De Mayo weekend.

The man who is going to be matched against Canelo is British contender John Ryder.

Ryder is coming off a string of victories, including an upset decision over former world champion Daniel Jacobs and an unexpected stoppage of unbeaten contender Zach Parker.

Ryder will be a tremendous underdog in the contest, but Hearn believes the rugger fighter has more than earned the opportunity to meet Canelo in the ring.

"Saul has announced his next fight will by 6 May in Guadalajara, John Ryder is definitely the frontrunner for that," Hearn told Metro.co.uk.

"We are still trying to finalize the contracts for that fight and hopefully you will get an announcement next week. Now we are just working on getting everything over the line. It is a massive fight for John. I really feel like he deserves it, and we are looking forward to giving him the opportunity and to appear on a historic show."

Provided Canelo wins, he would then move forward to a potential rematch with Bivol in the fall - provided Bivol wins his upcoming defense, which may come against Joshua Buatsi.
