Canelo Has No Issue Working Out New Deal With HBO

By Miguel Rivera

WBC, WBA middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) is looking forward to a potential return in the month of December.

His promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, is targeting the date of December 15th in New York City or Las Vegas.

Two weeks ago at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena, Canelo won a hard fought twelve round majority decision over undefeated Gennady Golovkin to capture the unified middleweight crown. The fight was a rematch of their September 2017 contest, which ended in a controversial twelve round draw.

The rematch with Golovkin was the final fight of Canelo's contract with HBO.

Several networks will be clamoring for the services of Canelo - like Showtime, ESPN and DAZN.

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, who has an exclusive content deal with ESPN, has already stated publicly that he would love to bring Canelo to the network.

But Canelo has no problem with reaching a new agreement with HBO, which suffered severe budget cuts in 2018 - creating a decline in their boxing content.

"We are ready to talk and sit down. We have done a good job, we are going to sit down and see what is going on. I have no problem to continue there [on HBO], we are doing good work and we are going to see what suits us both - both HBO and us," said Canelo to ESPN Deportes.

And his next opponent?

Trainer Eddy Reynoso does not rule out the idea of fighting former IBF champion David Lemieux, who is promoted by Golden Boy, but the veteran coach also names several others. Jermell Charlo is the mandatory challenger under the WBC, while Lemieux is the mandatory under the WBA.

"We already faced the best middleweight of recent years. And whoever comes, we're open to facing them.... (Jermall) Charlo, Billy Joe Saunders, Daniel Jacobs... all of those fighters, we're in position to face them," Reynoso said.
