Joe Gallagher, trainer for WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith, says Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez would have to come in with a "serious offer" if he truly wants to make a deal.
When looking for an opponent for his planned return in May, Canelo's handlers had sent offers to Smith and WBO world champion Billy Joe Saunders.
Both British boxers rejected the initial offer - with both claiming the amount was too low.
Canelo's team continued to negotiate the terms with Saunders, but never came back to the table with Smith.
The May event was called off, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
There is now talk that Canelo may fight again in September - but there has been no determination on where the event will take place. And there is no word on who he will face.
As BoxingScene.com reported a few weeks ago, Canelo's handlers are not looking to break the bank to secure his next opponent.
Smith is still ready to fight him, if the financial terms are in order, says Gallagher.
"Canelo, he's that puzzle isn't he," Gallagher told Sky Sports. "You can't work him out in the ring and you can't work out what he's going to do outside of the ring, until it's nailed on.
"Him and Callum Smith would be a great fight. Whether they're serious about fighting Callum Smith, that's down to them. If they want to fight Callum Smith and fight the No 1, all they have to do is say, 'We want to fight you,' pay the money and the job is done.
"If they really fancy the job, they'd make an offer, a serious offer. Not like last time they made an offer, and then eventually Callum did accept an offer, but they never came back."
