Andy Lee: If Martinez Beats Barker, I Want Him Next

New York, NY - On Saturday, October 1st, Andy Lee (26-1, 19KO's) will not only have the opportunity to erase the lone blemish on his otherwise perfect professional record, but also take yet another step toward fighting for a middleweight world championship, when he takes on former member of "The Contender: Season 3", Brian Vera (19-5, 12KO's). Lee-Vera II, which will air live on HBO's World Championship Boxing, is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and will be the main supporting bout of the evening to Sergio Martinez' WBC Middleweight Diamond Belt title defense against current undefeated, European Champion, Darren Barker. Lee-Vera II is scheduled for 10 rounds in the middleweight division.

Dr. Pepper Ballpark, Frisco, Texas - Junior middleweight contender James Kirkland (28-1, 25 KOs) stopped Dennis Sharpe (17-8-3, 4 KOs) in the first round. Sharpe went down twice. Kirkland is coming off the first loss of his career, which came in April at the hands of little known Nobohiro Ishida. Kirkland was down three times in that fight.

BoxingScene.com has been advised by promoter Lou DiBella that negotiations are taking place to match middleweights Andy Lee (26-1, 19KOs) and Brian Vera (18-5, 11KOs) for a date in October. Lee suffered his only career blemish to Vera in March of 2008. Vera, who went down in the first, came back to stop Lee in the seventh. Since the loss, Lee won eleven in a row. Vera had a few career bumps but in February he accomplished another upset with a split decision over former champion Sergio Mora. Lee's manager, Emanuel Steward, has made a request to DiBella to get a rematch done.

Berto-Zaveck, Manfredo-Vera Doubleheader in The Works

BoxingScene.com had been advised that Andre Berto's potential fight with IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck (31-1, 18KOs) has already been submitted to the IBF for approval. Berto (27-1, 21KOs) vs. Zaveck is going to take place no later than mid-October. If the fight happens in August, depending on the availability of a television date, one potential undercard fight being discussed is a middleweight bout between Peter Manfredo Jr. (37-6, 20KOs) and Brian Vera (18-5, 11KOs). Vera would return from his February upset win over former champion Sergio Mora. Another boxer likely to appear on the undercard is welterweight contender Randall Bailey, who happens to be the mandatory challenger to Zaveck. Bailey is willing to step aside with the guarantee that he's going to face the Berto-Zaveck winner next.

Middleweight contender Bryan Vera (18-5, 11KOs) may receive a well deserved reward for his upset win over former champion Sergio Mora (22-2-2, 6KOs). Vera won a close ten round split decision to become only the second man, with the late Vernon Forrest being the other, to beat Mora. The scores were 96-94 on two cards for Vera, with the third judge scoring 96-94 for Mora.
