Escobedo: Adrien Broner ‘Planned’ Coming in Overweight

Vicente Escobedo will meet with Dr. Pearlman Hicks of Long Beach, Calif., Monday afternoon for consultation regarding surgery on a broken nose he sustained Saturday night during his WBO junior lightweight title loss to Adrien Broner. “They did a few X-Rays in the hospital in Cincinnati, and it was broken, so I’m going to Long Beach today to see exactly what needs to be done,” Escobedo told BoxingScene.com/CSNBayArea.com. “We’re going to meet Dr. Hicks in Long Beach at 3 o’clock,” said Escobedo’s manager, Rolando Arellano. “He’s one of the best, and I trust his expertise with fighters’ situations, especially because he’s worked closely with the California commission.”

The unbeaten rising star at least provided that much once the opening bell rang, having his way with Vicente Escobedo en route to a sixth round stoppage Saturday evening at the US Bank Arena in his Cincinnati hometown. A tactical battle threatened to break out early, with both fighters hesitant to press the action. Broner finally opened up in the second round, scoring with hooks and right hands upstairs.

Broner once again missed weight, this time at Saturday morning's weigh-in, where the maximum allowed limit was 140 lb as per the terms of 11th hour negotiations to save the fight. Broner (23-0, 19KO) came in at 143 lb, once again exceeded a contracted limit by at least three pounds. The unbeaten fighter was 133.5 lb at Friday's weigh-in for what was supposed to be a super featherweight title defense against Escobedo, who weighed in at the 130 lb. divisional limit.
