Brian Viloria: record, next fight and profile →
WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria appeared on the most recent edition of The Boxing Lab, Boxingscene.com's official audio show. Viloria is coming off a huge upset win over Mexican slugger Giovani Segura. It was a fight in which most pundits gave "The Hawaiian Punch" little chance to win.
It’s come around again. Everything old is new again. In the previous decade, Pongsaklek Wonjongkam reigned as lineal and WBC Flyweight champion, racking up defenses while talented beltholders abounded. Lorenzo Parra, Takefumi Sakata, Eric Morel, Vic Darchinyan, and Nonito Donaire came and went.
BoxingScene.com's audio show, Boxing Lab Radio , returns with another packed show. The show is hosted by BoxingScene correspondants Ernest Gabion, Luis Sandoval and Ryan Burton.
WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria is seeking a unification title fight sometime in March next year against either WBC champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam of Thailand or WBA champion Hernan Marquez of Mexico.
After an emphatic and career-defining victory against legitimate top pound-for-pound slugger Giovani Segura, WBO flyweight champion Brian "The Hawaiian Punch" Viloria is back on top of boxing's food chain.
Former champion Giovani Segura (28-2-1, 24KOs) has been discharged from a hospital in the Philippines. Last Saturday in Pasig City, he challenged WBO champion Brian Viloria and took a lot of punishment before being stopped in the eight round of action. Segura was taken to the hospital where he was treated for a few days. He suffered very bad swelling around his left eye. The official medical report indicates that doctors found a small crack at the top of his cheekbone that required surgery but the injury is minor and a few weeks are needed for recovery. Segura says reports of having a broken orbital bone and other reports which indicated a serious blood clot, were exxagerations.
In what is shaping up as the biggest flyweight encounter in many years, WBA champion Hernan "Tyson" Marquez (32-2, 25KOs) is targeting an April unification with WBO beltholder Brian Viloria (30-3, 17KOs), who last Saturday scored a very impressive win by stopping betting favorite Giovani Segura in eight rounds. Marquez wants to have a tuneup in February and directed his team to get him Viloria for April. Viloria himself may return in February, but his next defense could get pushed to March.
The former WBA world flyweight champion, Luis "El Nica" Concepcion (23-3, 18KOs) is planning to return on a date in March of 2012, likely in Panama, according to his manager Rogelio Espino. He starts training camp in January. After getting stopped in the first round of his October rematch with Tyson Marquez, he plans to puruse the WBO's version of the title, which is currently held by Filipino puncher Brian Viloria (30-3, 17KOs).
The DMV brought it for big fight night. The crowd was raucous and rewarded for their enthusiasm. It was one of those nights where being there meant a ton. The crowd was nuts for Anthony Peterson before the televised broadcast. The ooh’s and ash’s when the replays were shown of Heavyweight Seth Mitchell’s knockout were deafening.
It was a shocking clash at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City. Even though he's the champion, most had WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria (30-3, 17KOs) as the underdog against power-punching challenger and former champion Giovani Segura. Instead of Segura blasting him out, Viloria dominated the fight, did major damage to the challenger's face and put him away in the eight round. Viloria had a plan, never feared Segura's power, and knew what to do to put him away.
