Welterweight prospect Brian Norman, Jr. will now face Augustine Maurus tonight, promoter Cameron Dunkin told BoxingScene late Friday night. The eight-round bout will take place at Buckhead Fight Club in Norman’s hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.
David Navarro was less than a minute away from lodging his third consecutive victory in as many fights until disaster struck for the former amateur standout. An untimely cut produced the first loss in the career of Los Angeles’ Navarro, who suffered a 6th round injury stoppage at the hands of Guadalajara’s Diuhl Olguin. Navarro was ahead 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46 on the official scorecards when a cut suffered earlier in the fight opened up to the point of not being allowed to continue. Roughly 20 seconds remained at the time of the stoppage in the 6th and final round of their non-televised featherweight fight Wednesday evening at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Welterweight prospect Brian Norman, Jr. knocked out Juan Rodriguez in the opening round Saturday night at the Manual Airtime Community Center Theatre in Miami, Florida. With the victory, Norman improves to 18-0 1 NC, 15 knockouts.
In the co-featured bout, an all-action affair between undefeated prospect Brian Norman, Jr. (17-0, 14 KOs) and Flavio Rodriguez (9-2-1, 7 KOs) was cut short after an accidental headbutt caused a deep vertical laceration on the forehead of Rodriguez. At the advice of the ringside physician, referee Gary Miezwa stopped the fight at 57 seconds of round number seven.
The last thing Brian Norman Jr. wanted was to go the distance in a second straight fight Friday night. That didn’t happen, but the hard-hitting welterweight prospect didn’t get the type of victory over Flavio Rodriguez that he wanted in his “ShoBox” debut. The 19-year-old Norman won their scheduled eight-rounder by technical unanimous decision because Rodriguez suffered a cut early in the seventh round that prevented him from continuing at Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota.

Two of Now Boxing Promotions' most promising prospects advanced their undefeated records this weekend, with both young fighters scoring first round knockouts. On Friday in Mexicali, Brian Norman, Jr. (9-0, 8KO) floored Dario Medina with a bruising body shot inside the sixty second mark of their bout. Brandun Lee (11-0, 9KO) was in action in West Virginia, treating the Mountaineer Casino fans to a 56 second battering of ring veteran Jorge Luis Munguia, and securing his 11th straight win.
Cameron Dunkin, best known for guiding the likes of Kelly Pavlik, Stevie Johnston, Nonito Donaire and Terence Crawford, among many other world champions has a new roster of up-and-comers that he's moving up the ranks. "I've got a few guys fighting in Mexico and of course, I've got (Jaron) 'Boots' Ennis in Virginia and so I've got four guys fighting this weekend," he told BoxingScene.com.
