Canelo Alvarez’s apparent desire for a rematch with Dmitry Bivol is not one shared by his inner circle, according to the manager of the Russian champion.

Bivol outpointed Alvarez by unanimous decision last May in a light heavyweight fight in which Bivol’s WBA belt was at stake. While Bivol defeated Alvarez only by a slim margin — he received 115-113 on all three judges’ scorecards — there was little controversy in the boxing world about the end result. Since then Alvarez has repeatedly stated that his priority is to avenge that loss, a point that his promoter, Eddie Hearn, has been especially keen on relaying to the press.

The Mexican superstar and current undisputed 168-pound champion is currently scheduled to defend his titles against London’s John Ryder on May 6 at Akron Stadium in Alvarez’s homeland of Guadalajara, Mexico. After that fight, Alvarez has made it clear he hopes to swap punches once more with Bivol in the fall.

But if the rematch is one that the fighter himself, his promoter, and his broadcaster (DAZN) are heavily interested in, it is one that is nevertheless apparently viewed with caution by some of Alvarez’s most important adherents.

Vadim Kornilov, the longtime handler of Bivol, thinks certain members of Alvarez’s team have no desire to see that rematch materialize. Kornilov did not elaborate.

Alvarez, of course, is both trained and managed by Eddy Reynoso, who has by far the most significant voice within the Alvarez camp.

“I do believe that Eddie, the fans and DAZN want the rematch,” Kornilov told RingTV.com. “There is no doubt this fight is attractive, as this is a fight Canelo clearly lost by majority of the rounds. I am sure Canelo personally wants revenge as well. At the same time, I don’t think Canelo’s team wants this fight and everything will be done to try to avoid this rematch and I don’t blame them.

“Canelo has said in the press that he only lost by a couple of rounds in the fight, then he said he wanted to fight Dmitry next in May and now he is all in,” Kornilov continued. “At the end of the day, actions speak louder than words.”

Bivol has been adamant about pursuing an undisputed matchup with WBO, WBA, WBC 175-pound champion and fellow Russian Artur Beterbiev. But business politics continue to make that fight difficult to realize.
