Billy Joe Saunders Splits With Ingle, May Retain Ben Davison

BILLY JOE SAUNDERS has split from trainer Dom Ingle.

The former WBO middleweight champion made the shock decision last week.

Saunders, 29, is now considering new coaches as he prepares for his fight with Shefat Isufi next month.

The Hatfield boxer could turn to long-time friend Ben Davison, who helped Tyson Fury shed 10st and challenge Deontay Wilder for the WBC heavyweight title in December.

Saunders was the man who introduced Davison to Fury in Marbella two years ago.

Davison was also in Saunders’ corner when he defended the WBO title against Artur Akavov back in 2016.

The slick southpaw has yet to make a decision on his new trainer though and will look at all of his options before committing.

Saunders has been working with Ingle since June 2017 at his Sheffield gym made famous by his father, Brendan, after he left trainer Jimmy Tibbs.

Ingle was in the corner for arguably Saunders’ career-best performance when he out-boxed David Lemieux in December 2017.

But he has fought just once since, a routine win over Charles Adamu in December, after a scheduled WBO title defence fell through against Demetrius Andrade because the British boxer failed a Voluntary Anti-Doping Association test for Oxilofrine.

Saunders is still hopeful of facing Isufi on April 13 at Wembley Arena despite doubts about whether or not the WBO super-middleweight title will be on the line.

The fight was announced to be Saunders’ first fight at the weight but now Gilberto Ramirez has claimed he is not vacating the title.

The WBO and Ramirez are currently locked in talks on the issue.

Saunders is still hot property in the US because of the Lemieux performance and is wanted by two major broadcasters in the States.

DAZN are keen to land the former world champion but he could also sign with ESPN and Top Rank, who have a close relationship with his British promoter Frank Warren.
