Beterbiev's Coach: A Fight With Canelo Will Never Happen

Marc Ramsay, the head trainer for WBC, IBF light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev (15-0, 15 KOs), does not expect a fight with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez to ever take place.

Back in November of last year, Canelo moved up by two weight divisions to score a knockout of Sergey Kovalev to capture the WBO light heavyweight title.

Not long after, Canelo vacated the title and is likely dropping down to compete at the super middleweight limit of 168-pounds.

While Canelo and his handlers had at one point discussed Beterbiev as a future possibility, Ramsay is quite confident the fight will never come off.

"It won't ever happen," Ramsay says of Beterbiev vs Canelo to Sky Sports. "I don't believe he will fight my guy. Fighting Kovalev and fighting Beterbiev are two different stories."

Kovalev defeated Beterbiev twice in the amateurs. The two of them had a natural rivalry in the pros, but Ramsay says the bad blood was purely competitive on their end. Another division rival is WBA champion Dmitry Bivol.

"When we got into a position to win a world title, there was never anything personal with Kovalev," Ramsay insists. "It was a challenge because Kovalev was the world champion. Today he doesn't speak about Kovalev or Bivol, he just wants the titles."

The next fight for Beterbiev is a mandatory defense against the IBF's top man, Meng Fanlong.

Future opponents could be located in the UK, as there are top rated contenders who are hungry for opportunities.

"It is very possible when you look at how strong the division is in England. Anthony Yarde and Joshua Buatsi are promising challenges. I know the English fans would love Beterbiev's offensive and spectacular style of boxing," Ramsay said.

[QUOTE=Mexican Bidness;20638636]The usual Canelo haters deflecting from the article, cause like Ramsay said on behalf of Beterbiev, Yarde and Buatsi are the challenging fights! Lol. Ramsay even said Beterbiev is only focused on the belts...ideally he’d just radar to talk…

Very good wording from the coach. Says it as it is without having to say it. Beterbiev is not a cherrypickin type of opponent. Kovalev was at that particular time. Canelo I think missed out on bigger potential by staying…
