With the fight confirmed between Vasiliy Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez for October 17, and with the possibility of meeting one of them in the future, the super featherweight champion of the World Boxing Council, Miguel 'Alacran' Berchelt , highlighted that although the Ukrainian boxer is the favorite, no one should rule out the explosiveness of the young man of Honduran descent.
Berchelt was discussing his imminent fight with Oscar Valdez, but he also took out some time to get excited about a possible fight against Lomachenko, as long as he manages to beat Valdez in a convincing way in November in a battle that promises to excite fans in Mexico.
“It's a difficult fight [Lomachenko-López], complicated, everyone, including me, we like Lomachenko's fine boxing, he's a strategist, the movements he has, those angles he handles. But, without a doubt, on the other side is the explosiveness and youth of Teofimo López, we saw him against (Richard) Commey," expressed Berchelt (37-1, 33 KO's) to ESPN Deportes.
"I think it is a fight with a reserved prognosis, I think many will go with Lomachenko, but Teofimo should not be ruled out because he is a young fighter, very hungry, and he can hurt Lomachenko since he's coming up from featherweight to lightweight."
On whether a victory against Valdez could open the doors for a fight like Lomachenko, Berchelt pointed out: “I think so, that's my goal, the truth is I think that by winning this fight with Oscar Valdez and winning decisively, if it is by knockout, [there would be a big shot for a future Lomachenko shot].... it would open a lot of doors for me in the 135-pound division.
“Although there are still great challenges in the 130, we are going to listen to the body, I would like to become the best super featherweight in the history of Mexico."
