Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, the co-promoter of heavyweight Tyson Fury, says the main requirement for his boxer's next opponent was "height."
Fury will face undefeated prospect Otto Wallin of Sweden on September 14th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Arum explains that a big opponent was needed in order to get Fury ready for a rematch with WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, which is being targeted for the early part of 2020.
Back in December 2018 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Wilder and Fury fought to a controversial twelve round split draw.
A rematch was scheduled for earlier this year, but it fell apart when Fury aligned himself with Top Rank and ESPN.
Fury returned to action in June, when he blew away Tom Schwarz in two rounds.
When picking an opponent for the fight in two weeks, Arum details that certain size requirements were needed.
“The one requirement we had [when choosing Fury’s opponent] was that we needed to find a big guy because he will be facing a big guy when he fights Wilder for the title," Arum told thesportsman.com
“Wallin was the best available fighter. He’s a decent fighter, he’s undefeated, he’s got a good punch and he’ll give Fury a tussle.”
Wilder has some business of his own to finish up. He's pegged for a rematch with Luis Ortiz, likely in November. Wilder stopped Ortiz in the tenth round in March 2018, but Ortiz had him in serious trouble in the seventh round.
Should both Wilder and Fury win their bouts without injury, Arum says the rematch is likely landing on February 22, at a venue in Las Vegas.
“Well the location’s going to be Las Vegas. That’s pretty much been decided," Arum said.
“The date is a bit more tentative, but the date we’re looking towards is February 22nd [2020].”
