Bob Arum isn’t worried about what would happen if the Vasiliy Lomachenko-Luke Campbell fight goes to the scorecards.
Their lightweight championship match will be contested in Campbell’s home country, but Lomachenko’s promoter lobbied to make sure none of the three judges assigned to score it are from England. None of the three judges are from Lomachenko’s native Ukraine, either.
Each of the three sanctioning organizations involved in their 12-round, 135-pound title bout – the WBA, WBC and WBO – assigned one judge to their August 31 bout at sold-out O2 Arena in London. The three judges for Lomachenko-Campbell will be Monte Carlo’s Jean Robert Laine (WBA), Mexico’s Omar Mintun (WBC) and Canada’s Benoit Roussel (WBO).
The referee for Lomachenko-Campbell, assigned by the British Boxing Board of Control, will be Scotland’s Victor Loughlin.
“I’m not concerned about the judging at all because there are no English judges, no Ukrainian judges and no American judges,” Arum told BoxingScene.com. “The judges are neutral. [Top Rank’s] Carl [Moretti] worked with the other side [Eddie Hearn, Campbell’s promoter] in approving the judges, and he’s confident that it’ll be a fair decision.”
Lomachenko (13-1, 10 KOs) is consistently listed as a 16-1 favorite over Campbell, but the odds are much better that their fight will go the distance.
Campbell (20-2, 16 KOs) has never been knocked out. The Hull, England, native’s two losses, to Yvan Mendy and Jorge Linares, both were 12-round, split-decision defeats.
Lomachenko’s lone loss also was a 12-round split decision, to Orlando Salido.
“Luke Campbell is a very good fighter,” Arum said. “Technically, he’s very, very good. He’s bigger than Loma, like all lightweights are, pretty much. But Loma is Loma. I’m confident because Loma is a fighter that, technically, is a very tough guy for any fighter to face and solve. It’s a good fight. I don’t think Loma will be affected by the crowd. He’s a real professional. I think it’s gonna be an entertaining fight. I believe Loma wins the fight and makes another great performance.”
ESPN+ will stream Lomachenko-Campbell as the main event of a multi-bout broadcast in the United States (1 p.m. EDT/10 a.m. PDT). Sky Sports Box Office will televise it via pay-per-view in the United Kingdom (6 p.m. BST; £19.95).
