Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macau - Two-time Olympic gold medal winner Zou Shiming (6-0, 1KO) scored four knockdowns on his way to win a twelve round unanimous decision over previously undefeated flyweight contender Kwanpichit OnesongchaiGym (27-1-2, 12KOs). The scores were 120-103, 119-106 and 119-106.
Both boxers were picking their shots in a slow paced start in the first round. Shiming began to let his hands go in the second, throwing hard punches from various angles. At the midway point of that round, Shiming scored a knockdown with a rapid counter shot. Moments later Shiming once again scored a big counter-shot knockdown. He nearly finished off a badly hurt OnesongchaiGym with a flurry of punches against the ropes, but the bell sounded.
Shiming continued to dominate the action in the third with hard punches that were landing at will. OnesongchaiGym was trying to change the tempo in the fourth, getting more aggressive and trying to land something big. But in the final minute of the same round Shiming came hammering back with his fast power punch combinations. In the sixth round, OnesongchaiGym lost a point for repeated low blows and then Shiming scored a flash knockdown.
In the seventh, Shiming's left eye appeared to be swelling rapidly and OnesongchaiGym was landing some good punches. In the eight, they were trading punches and OnesongchaiGym was pushing the action over what appeared to be a tiring Shiming. There was a clash of heads at the end of that round, and a cut opened up around the left eye of Shiming.
As they entered the tenth, OnesongchaiGym continued to come forward, press the action, and Shiming was using his legs and looking to outbox the Thai challenger. They began the eleventh round trading hard punches. OnesongchaiGym was landing better but not enough shots to get Shiming in serious trouble.
Shiming was sticking and moving in the twelfth round, avoiding the counters of OnesongchaiGym and coasting for most of the final minute. During the final thirty seconds, Shiming scored a fourth knockdown but didn't have enough time to finish OnesongchaiGym off.
