Alejandro ‘Payasito’ Hernandez hopes Friday’s fight setting produces similar results as was the case a year ago. The bantamweight contender returns to the ring this weekend in a 10-round showdown versus Martin Casillas, headlining on Telemundo live from Auditorio Blackberry in Mexico City (Friday, Telemundo/Claro Sports, 11:35 p.m. ET).
Both fighters did their part to preserve the main event, each coming in right at the 118 lb. weight limit during Thursday’s weigh-in.
For the second straight year, Hernandez (28-11-2, 15KOs) headlines the first Telemundo-televised card of the year from Mexico, with Friday’s offering serving as the only card of the spring season to take place south of the border. His spring appearance one year ago spawned an eventual title run, beginning with a a 5th round knockout Marvin Mabait last March, ruining the Filipino's chances of a bantamweight title shot.
A follow-up win over Daniel Rosas solidified Hernandez’ chances of landing a coveted title shot, though falling short in a bid at unbeaten bantamweight titlist Tomoki Kameda last November. The loss ended a brief yet impactful three-fight win streak that saw victories over Mabait and Daniel Rosas propel the veteran to the title stage.
Casillas (15-4, 9KOs) bounced from a two-fight losing streak to score a stay-busy win last December.
