Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s stunning win over Ray Sanchez, has put the gangling young man on to a different level, and plainly removed the involuntary shadow of big daddy.
Julio Jr. went right into the lion’s den by going to Sanchez’s home territory of Albuquerque to accomplish the catch-weight deed.
Brought along relatively carefully until now, due to a scant amateur record, Julio Jr, put it all together to outslug Ray with six of the best, in a war.
He’s currently ranked number eight in the World Boxing Council’s welterweight division. WBC President Jose Sulaiman said a further progression to more rarefied heights in the top ten, is a matter for the ratings committee, but added: “If you ask me, I believe he should rise.”
Don Jose also added: “I said since the very beginning that he was the best prospect in Mexico to become a champion. And I told myself, this is the real test to prove what I’d been saying for a long time. I was very happy to see that he’s a fact now, not an idea! He showed the world that he’s authentic.”
But Don Jose cautioned that Julio Jr. who’s still only 21-years-old is yet, and not quite the finished article. And can still learn more about ring craft and utilizing his power left hook to realize even more potential. So Don Jose estimates that Julio Jr. would do well to gain at least a year’s more experience before going for world title laurels.
