Frank Warren, promoter for light heavyweight prospect Tommy Fury, says a deal is getting close for a showdown with Youtube star turned boxer, Jake Paul.
They were initially set to collide in late 2021. Fury withdrew with a training injury, and he was later replaced by Tyron Woodley, who was brutally knocked out in the sixth round.
It was then rescheduled to last August, which didn't move forward as planned as Fury was denied entry into the United States.
Fury was again replaced, this time by heavyweight prospect Hasim Rahman Jr. - but that fight also fell through when Rahman's handlers revealed that he was unable to make the contract weight. Paul returned months later to decision MMA legend Anderson Silva.
Fury, the younger brother of WBC heayweight champion Tyson Fury, saw action once in 2022. He picked up a stay-busy six round decision win in April. Another fight was planned for later in the year, in the Middle East, but it fell through at the last minute over a dispute regarding the opponent's contract weight.
According to Warren, the ongoing negotiations are very positive and both sides are working hard to finalize a deal.
“Both sides are really eager to making it happen and I don’t think we’re far off getting it on,” Warren told IFL TV.
“It’s a life changing money fight for [Tommy] and obviously he wants it. It was on, then he couldn’t get into the States which was a problem. But we’ll get it on, we’re really determined to make it happen. All sides are really good on getting it over the line. We will get it over the line.”
