WBC junior middleweight champion Vernon Forrest told members of the media during a recent conference call that he needs to fight and beat Ricardo Mayorga in order to satisfy his career by removing two blemishes with one win. Forrest has two losses on his record, both of them to Mayorga.
Forrest returns to the ring on Dec. 1, defending his title against mandatory challenger Michele Piccirillo, Showtime will televise. Mayorga comes back on Nov. 23 in a Showtime pay-per-view main event against Fernando Vargas at a catch-weight of 166-pounds. Mayorga is expected to drop down to 154-pounds after the fight.
“Absolutely [I’ll fight Mayorga]. I've said that many times before. He is the only fighter that I feel that I have to fight again, and I have to beat to satisfy my career. There is no Mayorga without Piccirillo, though. I'm going to make sure I handle the business ahead of me come December 1. And whatever happens December 1 is fair game. Once we get past December 1,” Forrest said.
Forrest is also looking to land the million dollar prize, a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“That's another fight I've been screaming about. I fought the best guy in the world at the time he was the best guy in the world, and I'm willing to fight Floyd at the top of his game. But the first order of business is Piccirillo on December 1,” Forrest said. “Once we handle that business. All the questions of who I need to fight or want to fight or who is out there, I'll be will entertain those questions then. Right now out of respect and out of being focused, let me take care of my business with Michele Piccirillo first.”
