Alamodome Dome, San Antonio, Texas - BoxingScene.com caught up with former super bantamweight champion Wilfredo "Papito" Vazquez Jr. after his split decision loss to Nonito Donaire.
Vazquez had the support of the largely Mexican crowd throughout his entertaining battle against his Filipino adversary. WV2 entered the ring during his ring walk carrying a Mexican flag to the delight of the fans.
Vazquez told BoxingScene that it was an honor to carry the Mexican flag and that he carried it with a lot of pride.
"I carried the Mexican flag with a lot of pride and respect. The Mexican fans cheered me on and gave me a lot of support," stated Vazquez.
"I have a great friend in Texas and I wanted to carry Mexican flag for him. I am Hispanic and a Latino and it was an honor to carry their flag. They are great fans."
Vazquez said that the fight was a great experience and that there was no shame in losing to Donaire. He also said that he hopes to be back in the ring soon.
"With my experience I don't see anything wrong with losing to Donaire. He is the best bantamweight in the world. I learned a lot in this fight. I will be back in the gym in a few weeks and hope to back in ring soon," said Vazquez.
