The cuts suffered on the eyelid and cheekbone in his last two outings in the ring could lead to an even longer layoff for WBC super featherweight world champion Francisco 'Bandido' Vargas (23-0-2, 17KOs) of Mexico.
Vargas is not ruling out a layoff until 2017, which is possibly going to lead to the World Boxing Council ordering a fight between Takashi Miura and Miguel Roman for an interim-title until the champion recovers.
Vargas took a lot of punishment during his twelve round draw with Orlando Salido in the month of June. The bout is a leading contender for 'Fight of The Year' honors.
"We are discussing my return that probably might come at the end of the year. There is nothing concrete. I'm starting to jog and work lightly, it is a matter of what I'm told by my manager and my promoter Golden Boy Promotions. I do not rule resting until next year. We will to see how the cuts improve. We will be going to the doctor and everything depends on what the doctor says," Vargas said to ESPN Deportes.
"The cuts, they could be a disadvantage, because there is a risk that they could open again. I have no problem if they order an interim-title fight. If I can not fight, [Miura and Roman] can fight. It would be good fight and whoever wins is going to raise expectations because they will go against me."
One fight he would like in the future is a unification with WBO champion Vasyl Lomachenko, who many regard as the top fighter in the weight division.
"I think it's a fight that people would like to see. As I've said I want to fight the best and if one day we fight I will receive a good purse," Vargas said.
