Earlier today Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport shocked the boxing world by announcing that his fighter - IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook - would move up two weight divisions to face WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (35-0). The bout will take place on September 10th at the O2 In London. It will aired live on Sky Sports Box Office and HBO World Championship Boxing.
For weeks Hearn had been negotiating separate deals to make a Brook (36-0) versus WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas unification bout and a Golovkin fight against Matchroom middleweight contender Chris Eubank Jr.
Vargas and his promoter Top Rank had agreed to terms to travel to the UK to face Brook but Brook's side wasn't happy with the financial terms being offered.
Vargas believes that the risk he presents is simply too great for the amount of money he was being offered compared to the money Brook will make to face Golovkin and win, lose, or draw, he will still retain his IBF welterweight title.
"He wanted a bigger payday. The way I see it is like this - between him losing to me or GGG, he preferred to take the risk with the biggest reward.
"After fighting at 160 he can still come back down to 147 and defend his title. I'm assuming that he saw too much of a risk fighting me for the amount of money he was offered," Vargas told BoxingScene.com.
As for what's next, Vargas said, "Well I'm staying in the gym and looking forward to fighting in October or November. I'm looking for the fights that the fans would like. I have to sit down with my manager and promoter and see what options we have."
Vargas finished or conversation by say, "A fight versus (WBC welterweight champion) Danny Garcia is a fight that I'm still interested in."
