If a mega fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao fails to materialize, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has hinted that undefeated WBA junior welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (26-0) is a strong candidate to face Pacquiao next spring.
Pacquiao just won a dominant unanimous decision over Chris Algieri in Macau, China. Pacquiao scored six knockdowns in the fight and Vargas was critical of Algieri's performance, saying that the New Yorker fought "scared".
"It seems like Algieri didn't have the experience to be in the ring with Manny and he was scared out if his mind," Vargas told BoxingScene.com.
Vargas is no stranger to fighting on big pay-per-views as he has fought on numerous Mayweather and Pacquiao undercards. His victory over Antonio Demarco on the Pacquiao-Algieri undercard was his third fight in a row against a left handed fighter.
When asked if that was by design Vargas replied, "Exactly. I knew that there was a reason for me facing southpaws. This will help me be ready for Manny."
