Junior middleweight contender Vanes "The Nightmare" Martirosyan appeared on this week's edition of The Boxing Lab, BoxingScene.com's weekly radio show. Below is a recap of some of the topics the outspoken Armenian touched on when speaking to co-hosts Ernest Gabion, Ryan Burton and Luis Sandoval.
His thoughts on why he keeps calling out opponents:
"I just want to fight the best out there. I am sick of these champions not fighting the best guy out there. I am ranked high and will have to just wait until I get my turn."
His thoughts on his next fight:
"I am not really sure on who I am I am fighting next but some people have told me that a fight versus (WBO champion) Sergiy Dzinziruk is 90% done. I hope it is true. We will see."
His thoughts on his prospects of facing Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, whom he is the mandatory challenger:
"I don't know about that fight. I talked to the WBC and they said he has a year before he has to fight me. What am I supposed to do wait a year? Top Rank said that Canelo will never fight me. To me it is like how (Sergio) Martinez and Chavez Jr. will never fight each other.
His thoughts on facing Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo in a title eliminator for the right to face Alvarez:
"They will just keep making eliminators so that he can stay protected. Look, I will go to Angulo's backyard and fight him. I will go to Mexico, Armenia, Canada or wherever. That is how I got the "Nightmare" nickname. I would go into people's backyards and beat them."
His thoughts on meeting fighters in person outosde of the ring:
"Of course there is respect when we see each other in person. I see Sergio all the time and he says "como estas" and I say hello. Me and Angulo are cool too when we would see each other in person but its different with Canelo. I would slap Canelo in the face if I saw him. I would slap the sh*t out him. He only fights 147 and 140 pound fighters. I don't get it. I will go to his fight (versus Gomez) and call him out but I don't know, they might not let me in the press conference. They probably have warrants out for my arrest (laughing)."
His thoughts on the Cotto-Margarito rematch:
"Cotto is the only champ (in my weight division) that I respect. He has a lot of balls to fight Margarito again. I hope Margarito gets what he deserves. Karma is a bitch."
His thoughts on allegedly ducking Erislandy Lara:
"I will fight Lara. It is funny. They say want to fight (me) and then I tell my people to make the fight and they say Lara's people don't want to do it. I don't know what is going on. He did beat Paul Williams though even though he lost. He gets credit for that."
