Hernan “Tyson” Marquez came up short against Brian Viloria in their championship unification bout as Marquez’s corner threw in the towel and stopped the fight after Marquez went down for a third time in the 10th round.
It was an exciting fight but Marquez revealed he didn’t walk into the ring feeling 100% and also reinjured his left hand in the 3rd round.
“It was a great fight. I had indigestion problems with my stomach. I went in with my stomach inflamed. He hit me downstairs and it hurt me. I fought a bit uncomfortable. In my last fight I tore my tendon [in my hand] and in the 3rd round I tore it again. But regardless, it was a great fight” revealed Marquez.
It was a fire fight between both fighters as even in the rounds where Marquez started strong, Viloria would come back and in the case of round 5, even dropped Marquez after being hurt himself. At the end of the day, Marquez admits he was a bit careless in the ring and points to that as the deciding factor in the outcome of the fight.
“We were pressing and there was a round where I had him going a bit and I kept going but starting the round I got careless and with that carelessness we lost the fight. When you have two fighters who can punch, the fight can end with one careless move. I got careless and he caught me” said Marquez.
Viloria came in after the fight into Marquez’s dressing room to congratulate him on a hard fought effort as both men shook hands and showed each other tremendous respect. While Marquez would love nothing more than an immediate rematch, he feels Viloria may not want to so he’s prepared to take a bounce back fight and get right back into title contention.
