Danny Garcia approaches his “Farewell to Brooklyn” bout and perhaps the last of his career, two middleweights meet in Britain in a crossroads fight, women’s boxing brings us three title fights, and the WBC Grand Prix tournament hosts its semifinal round. More on all of these in this week’s TV picks:
Friday, October 17: Kieron Conway vs. George Liddard (DAZN)
The broadcast begins at 2 p.m. Eastern Time (7 p.m. BST).
One middleweight is thrice-beaten but ranked and wants to ensure he still has a future in the division. His opponent is unbeaten but unranked and wants to capitalize on his veteran foe’s recognizable name.
Conway, 23-3-1 (7 KOs), is a 29-year-old from Northampton, England. He is ranked 13th by the WBA and WBC, and 14th by the WBO. Conway’s first defeat came early in his career, a three-round split decision to Derrick Osaze as part of a one-night tournament. In 2021, Conway lost another split decision, this one to Souleymane Cissokho at junior middleweight. Cissokho is now a welterweight contender.
And in 2022, Conway dropped a unanimous decision to Austin “Ammo” Williams back up at middleweight. He has won five in a row since, including a split decision over the 19-4-1 Ryan Kelly in November 2024 and a fourth-round TKO of the 15-1-2 Gerome Warburton this past May.
Liddard, 12-0 (7 KOs), is a 23-year-old from Billericay, England. He is not yet ranked at 160lbs. This will be his third fight of 2025. In January, Liddard outpointed the aforementioned Osaze, who was 13-2 at the time. And in May, on the undercard of Conway-Warburton, Liddard scored a fifth-round stoppage win against the 19-1 Aaron Sutton.
This show is taking place at York Hall in London.
Saturday, October 18: Danny Garcia vs. Danny Gonzalez (Millions.co)
The broadcast begins at 6 p.m. Eastern Time (11 p.m. BST).
Garcia, 37-4 (21 KOs), is a former junior welterweight champion who also won a world title at 147lbs. Those glory days are now long ago for the 37-year-old from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He’s nearing the next phase of his life and diving solely into his other pursuits – which include being a boxing promoter – and Garcia told BoxingScene’s Tris Dixon he is “85% sure” this will be his final fight.
That’s why this fight in New York City is being billed as Garcia’s “Farewell to Brooklyn,” where he has fought nine times before, going 7-2 at Barclays Center.
This will only be Garcia’s third fight since his loss to Errol Spence at the end of 2020. Garcia defeated Jose Benavidez Jnr at junior middleweight in July 2022, then returned 25 months later as a middleweight. He did not look good at all against titleholder Erislandy Lara in September 2024. Garcia went down in the ninth round and did not come out of his corner for the 10th after his father-trainer Angel Garcia threw in the towel.
This will be Garcia’s first bout since. BoxRec lists Garcia-Gonzalez as taking place at junior middleweight.
“I was training and I was in shape, but my heart and my soul wasn’t there leading into my last fight,” Garcia said at a press conference for this bout with Gonzalez. “That’s 85% of the sport. But now being back in Brooklyn, I have the heart and spirit of a fighter, and I’m ready to show it.”
Gonzalez, 22-4-1 (7 KOs), is a 35-year-old from Queens, about seven miles away from where this fight is being held.
Gonzalez has fought professionally for 13 years, reaching a ceiling well below the heights that Garcia attained – and likely still below whatever level of ability that Garcia has left. His defeats came against Danny O’Connor (TKO3 in 2017), Chris Algieri (UD10 in 2019), the 15-2-2 Petros Ananyan (MD10 in 2021) and the 11-5 Paulo Cesar Galdino (SD8 in 2022).
Gonzalez rebounded from the back-to-back losses to Ananyan and Galdino by putting together back-to-back wins, taking a pair of unanimous decisions over the 7-3 Keane McMahon and the 24-3-1 Michael Anderson. The Anderson fight took place about a year ago.
The undercard includes a junior welterweight fight between Nahir Albright, 17-2 (7 KOs), and Richard Commey, 31-5-1 (28 KOs); a heavyweight bout between Damian Knyba, 16-0 (10 KOs), and Joey Dawejko, 28-13-4 (16 KOs); a lightweight match between Chris Colbert, 17-3 (6 KOs), and Blas Ezequiel Caro, 12-8 (5 KOs); and a super middleweight fight between Gabriel Rosado, 27-17-1 (16 KOs), and Vaughn Alexander, 19-16-2 (12 KOs).
Saturday, October 18: Sarah Bormann vs. Yuko Kuroki (DAZN)
The broadcast begins at 3 p.m. Eastern Time (8 p.m. BST).
This is a unification bout between two of the four strawweight titleholders.
Bormann, 20-1 (7 KOs), won the vacant WBO belt in December with a unanimous decision over Jennifer Sabrina Meza. The 35-year-old from Germany – this fight is taking place in Hamburg – made her first defense in April, taking a split decision against Isabel Rivero. Bormann’s only loss came in December 2023, when she unsuccessfully challenged junior flyweight titleholder Yesica Nery Plata and came up on the short end of a split decision.
Kuroki, 25-8-2 (10 KOs), picked up the vacant WBA title in January with a unanimous decision against Ye Kyeng Seo. The 34-year-old from Japan made her first defense in June, outpointing Nanako Suzuki.
The other two titleholders at 105lbs are Kim Clavel (IBF) and Yokaste Valle (WBC).
Saturday, October 18: Lourdes Juarez vs. Yesica Nery Plata (DAZN)
The broadcast begins at 8 p.m. Eastern Time (1 a.m. BST).
This fight pits the current WBC titleholder at 108lbs against the previous titleholder, who never lost her belt in the ring.
Nery Plata, 30-2 (3 KOs), is the former titleholder. The 31-year-old from Mexico won the belt from Kim Clavel via unanimous decision in January 2023 and defended it at year’s end with a split decision over Sarah Bormann. Nery Plata hasn’t fought since then; she vacated the WBC title due to a pregnancy that sadly didn’t come to term.
Juarez, 38-4 (5 KOs), is a two-division titleholder who reigned at 115lbs from 2020 until 2022. She dropped down in weight to flyweight and then to junior flyweight, nabbing the vacant WBC belt last November with a wide decision over Yesenia Gomez. Juarez, a 38-year-old from Mexico, defended it in March with a ninth-round TKO of Mirna Sanchez.
Their fight headlines at the South Padre Island Convention Center in Texas.
The show also includes a junior welterweight bout between Omar Juarez, 19-2 (7 KOs) and Omar Rosario, 14-2, (4 KOs); unified middleweight titleholder Desley Robinson, 10-3 (3 KOs), defending her IBF and WBO belts against Logan Holler, 11-3-1 (4 KOs); and, on the preliminary undercard, former bantamweight titleholder Shurretta Metcalf, 14-5-1 (2 KOs), will return against Krystal Rosado, 7-0 (2 KOs).
Sunday, October 19: WBC Grand Prix tournament semifinals (DAZN)
The broadcast begins at 11 a.m. Eastern Time (4 p.m. BST).
Eight fights total – two apiece at featherweight, junior welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight. More information on each bout is on the WBC’s website.
