After his Felix Trinidad called Oscar De La Hoya a coward ( click here to read ) for using his name to negotiate fights, his father/trainer, Felix Trinidad, Sr. called him an opportunist for the same tactics.
During a recent interview with journalist Rey Colon, Trinidad Sr. confirmed what his son stated on Monday, that he is willing to face De La Hoya one more time if De La Hoya is serious, but he feels De La Hoya is using his son's name to lure in welterweight Floyd Mayweather, Jr. for a May 2007 bout.
"Tito would give him the opportunity once again, if De La Hoya is speaking serious. What we have analyzed is that he is using the name of Tito to promote his fights. And at the moment, he is using it to promote a possible fight with (Floyd) Mayweather. He is an opportunist. He knows that Tito is not going to challenge him at 147. That is also opportunism. If he does not want to fight, he should respect and leave Tito alone, because he is in retirement,” Trinidad, Sr. said.
Trinidad Sr. went to further say that if De La Hoya is serious about facing Trinidad again, he should sit down with Trinidad’s promoter, Don King and sign for the fight.
"He says that he has tried to look for revenge and that he could never obtain it. That remains clear, and it is not because Tito never him the chance, but because De La Hoya would never accept the fight. This is the seventh time the fight is presented to him, expressed Trinidad, Sr.”
“He is looking for Tito to clarify that they have not fought because Tito has not accepted his offer for revenge. It’s bad practice to say that Tito does not want to give him his revenge. He had many opportunities and did not follow through from fear. He should negotiate with Don King and see what happens. Tito is clam. That stops when the fight is signed. He knows the proposal. That will demonstrate with facts not words if he wants to fight again.”
