According to Peter Fury, uncle and trainer of IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (25-0, 18KOs), his nephew will NOT retire following the upcoming rematch with Wladimir Klitschko on July 9th.
Last November, Fury won an upset twelve round unanimous decision over Klitschko to capture the world titles in Germany.
The rematch takes place at the Manchester Arena in Manchester.
In a recent interview, Fury promised to retire from the sport - win, lose or draw in the upcoming rematch - and said he'd lost his motivation to continue fighting any further.
Peter Fury spoke to talkSPORT and said his nephew will NOT hang up his gloves after the Manchester bout. He says Tyson was very upset over the continued lack of support from the UK fans. Tyson also discussed a move to the United States, which Peter Fury says could likely happen.
“I’ve been speaking to him at length, and because of the poor reception he’s had in his own country, he has contemplated retirement," he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breafast. "He’s thought, ‘what’s the point? What am I fighting for?’ It’s a very sad state of affairs. Tyson is a genuine fighting man. He loves to fight, he loves to box. And if he’s not going to be accredited by his home country, he’s thinking about moving out altogether.
“I think it’s a high possibility that he will go to the United States, they love him over there. It’s quite bizarre that other countries idolise him. He gets massive reception everywhere he goes, yet in England it’s totally the opposite. He will box on. He’s a fighting man and a true world champion and he will cement his legacy. He will go down in history as a great fighter, that’s our aim.”
Should Tyson defeat Klitschko in July, Peter says a likely target would be IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (16-0, 16KOs), who on June 25th will make the first defense of his title against undefeated American Olympian Dominic Breazeale.
“Yes, we’d like that fight,” Peter said. “We’d have to really have a look if the Anthony Joshua fight can be made great, but we’d definitely like that fight.
“We’ve spoken to [promoter] Eddie Hearn as well, and he said he’s also like that fight, providing Tyson comes through against Wladimir Klitschko. I think Joshua is a big fight as well, so if we can make that fight we’ll certainly give it a go. But I can’t see why that fight can’t be made.”
