Robert Garcia, older brother and trainer of three division champion Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs), is confident that his younger sibling would be too strong and defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) at this stage of the game.
Mikey was in action last month in Brooklyn, when he moved up to the junior welterweight division to dominate Adrien Broner - who happens to be Mayweather's close friend.
Mayweather, a former five division world champion, returns to the ring on August 26th against UFC superstar Conor McGregor, who is making his debut in a boxing ring.
Robert Garcia has a lot of respect for Mayweather's ability, but he believes the former five division champion - now that he's 40 years old and inactive for two years - is not capable of beating Mikey.
"I don’t think Floyd would fight Mikey because he’s already forty and he already told us, 'Look, I’m already tired, my body is sore. I cannot box anymore.' He’s fighting McGregor because it’s an easy fight for him, but in boxing I don’t think he would fight right now," Robert Garcia told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
"At this time, Mikey may be too strong for Floyd. I think Mikey is too strong and beats Floyd, but that doesn’t mean Mikey is better than Floyd, it just means that Mikey got Floyd at an old age. Floyd is the best fighter in the business for the last twenty years, maybe even in history."
As far as Mayweather's upcoming fight, Robert Garcia expects an easy victory for Floyd - but he actually feels that a rematch will happen, in the UFC, and Mayweather will win that contest as well.
"Floyd’s going to win this fight pretty easily and after that we will hear McGregor and Dana White challenge Mayweather to do a fight in the cage, and then they’re going to do a cage fight, and I think Mayweather still wins that fight," Robert Garcia said.
