WBA 'regular' welterweight champion Keith Thurman (25-0, 21KOs) is gunning for a shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26KOs), who holds the WBO, WBC, WBA 'super' welterweight titles.
Mayweather has shown little interest. Instead, Mayweather offered Thurman a good position the undercard of his scheduled return, on September 12th at the MGM Grand, against up and comer Errole Spence Jr. (17-0, 14KOs).
Spence got an impressive victory last Saturday when he easily knocked out Phil Lo Greco in three rounds at the MGM Grand.
Thurman has no interest in Spence. He wants Mayweather.
"It was highly disrespectful. The boy is what? 16-0? 15-0? He hasn't fought one B-class opponent. He's an Olympian, great potential, sharp kid. When I was on HBO for my first time, I called out Paulie Malignaggi, Timothy Bradley and Floyd Mayweather. Paulie said I was disrespectful and said I didn't even deserve him - and I was 18-0 with 17 knockouts. If I didn't deserve Paulie, how would I even deserve Floyd?," Thurman said.
"I made that statement because Floyd was in jail. I was hoping when he got out he would brush the dust off with this loud mouth puncher but that's not what happened. I threw a dart out there and made an attempt. I even called him the king but every king has their day. I told Floyd to see me 'One Time.' How many times will he be in the ring? One time, two times."
