Tampa, Florida - After Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KO’s) was victorious last night with an eight round stoppage of Luis Collazo, the questions of a potential fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. were plentiful. Thurman feels his performance against Collazo should warrant him a shot at the top guys in the welterweight division.
“I want an opportunity to fight the best,” Thurman told BoxingScene.com. “This year was the first time I got to fight someone in the top 10 in my division, and I was happy about that. We had a great veteran in Luis Collazo who was able to make a lot of great champions in the past look bad. He was able to make me look bad for a round. I got back and composed. I’m 26 years old and learning and evolving in the sport whether it’s boxing and being methodical, fighting guys that are world champions and veterans on this level.”
Should the opportunity come to fight Mayweather (48-0, 26KOs), Thurman says he guarantees it will not be a boring fight.
“Floyd is the top dog,” explained Thurman. “He’s the king of division. I want the chance to fight the king. I guarantee you, it will not be a boring fight. It’s not going to be a Manny Pacquiao fight, it’s not going to be a Marcos Maidana fight. You’re going to see a young talented man going against the best fighter in the sport.”
