Saul "Canelo" Alvarez does not want any distractions. His focus is 100% set on Britain's Ryan Rhodes, who will challenge Canelo for the WBC super welterweight world title on June 18 in Guadalajara. Trainer Jose "Chepe" Reynoso says the city of Puebla is still a possible site. Reynoso saw no reason to respond to the recent taunts from Julio César Chávez Jr., who challenged Canelo to a fall showdown.
"I think sometimes words are not necessary. How do you plan to get more milk without milking the cow? At the moment Canelo is committed for June 18 in Guadalajara or Puebla. We do not like to get ahead of ourselves. Our opponent is Rhodes, a challenger that was designated by the WBC, and as far as I understand it - Chávez has to fight for the title on June 4," Reynoso said.
Besides the planned fights, Reynoso doesn't see a fight taking place because the two boxers are aligned with rival promoters who don't work with each other.
"Julio is with Top Rank and we are with Oscar de la Hoya. If the fighters are to fight, there must first be a relationship between their companies, and so far there isn't one. If the two promoters come together, we would examine the terms and if they are feasible - we will take the fight," Reynoso said. "But we are not going to play on words of Julio, because we want Canelo's defense to be a success. We are planning for six weeks of training in Big Bear, and we are focused on that."
