If things go as Kevin Cunningham has planned, Devon Alexander will fight three times in 2012. Alexander's trainer and manager said that activity is the key to a young fighter staying sharp.
"Part of the problem is these young guys fighting every 8, 9 or 10 months. Young fighters need to stay busy so they can stay sharp," said Cunningham.
Cunningham said that he plans on speaking with Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer soon. He said that in a perfect world Alexander would return in the summer and then face the Victor Ortiz-Andre Berto winner in the fall.
"I am going to speak to Richard soon and figure out our next move. I would like to see Devon fight around July then face the Ortiz-Berto winner in the fall," Cunningham told BoxingScene.com
Cunningham admits that their hands are somewhat tied as far as who they can face in the summer as Ortiz, Berto, Amir Khan, Robert Guerrero and Selcuk Aydin all have opponents set for the summer months. One name that he did mention was Erik Morales if the Mexican star gets past Danny Garcia next month.
"We would fight Morales. If Morales wants that fight then we can meet at a catch-weight around 145. Also Jan Zaveck who gave Berto a hard time, maybe we could fight him," said Cunningham.
The winner of the Ortiz-Berto fight is seen by Cunningham as the biggest fight available for Alexander. He also thinks Alexander is the biggest fight available for the winner of that fight as well.
"Outside of a (Floyd) Mayweather or (Manny) Pacquiao the Ortiz-Berto winner is the biggest fight out there. The winner of that fight isn't getting Mayweather or Pacquiao either so who else are they going to fight besides Devon?"
