Sunny Edwards climbed off the floor in the seventh round but continued collecting silverware when he claimed the British super-flyweight title against Marcel Braithwaite at the Copper Box Arena in London.
He was caught with his hands down in the pocket by a right and follow up left hand in round seven but rallied to outbox his co-challenger the rest of the way to win by margins of 118-109 and 117-110 twice.
Switch-hitting Edwards was well in control by half way and said in fight week that he had been frustrated by his lack of opportunities on the domestic scene but he was punished for a lapse of concentration that on the world scene he might not get away with.
Edwards had success in the eighth as he got his right hand going from the orthodox stance but Braithwaite remained game.
‘That’s better,” said Grant Smith, as Edwards returned to his corner.
But Sunny was cut by his right eye in the ninth and Braithwaite picked up a warning for using his head in that session.
Edwards didn’t panic but he repeatedly dabbed at the wound before the session closed.
Marcel remained a threat but more often than not Edwards was just a step ahead. Sunny used his hands down, flashy counterpunching through the 12th as a frustrated Braithwaite gave chase and while Edwards, now 14-0, finished with a gash over his right eyebrow there was a smile on his face.
Braithwaite drops to 9-2.
