The World Boxing Council's Secretary General, Mauricio Sulaiman, spoke with BoxingScene.com to explain the situation surrounding the WBC welterweight title and the championship status of the current beltholder, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs).

Citing WBC President Jose Sulaiman, numerous outlets in Mexico reported that Mayweather was going to get stripped of his WBC title, because the unbeaten is moving up to 154-pounds to fight Miguel Cotto for the WBA championship on May 5th, and because Mayweather will then begin an 87-day prison sentence for a domestic abuse charge.

Mauricio tells BoxingScene the reports in Mexico are inaccurate. There was "miscommunication" between Jose and some of the reporters, says Mauricio.

"There was miscommunication. Floyd Mayweather holds a record for winning the most WBC titles in five weight divisions. Mayweather has an eleven year history with the WBC. He is the most loyal fighter and we are in full support of him and his career," Mauricio told BoxingScene.com.

On July 28th in San Jose, California - Selcuk Aydin (23-0, 17KOs) and Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (29-1-1, 18KOs) will battle for the WBC's interim-title at 147-pounds.

The interim-title is rarely used by the WBC. In this particular situation, the WBC felt the interim-title was necessary. Aydin, who won the WBC's silver title in June 2010, has been waiting for nearly two years to get a crack at the full championship. Because Aydin has been waiting, patiently, the WBC approved the interim-title for his fight with Guerrero.

"The WBC's concept of interim-titles is still in the rules. The interim-title was created many, many years ago and specifically for situations like this one. The reason [we rarely use] the interim concept, is because it was abused tremendously - especially by other organizations and it created so much confusion all over the world with the boxing fans. We do still have in our rules the possibility of accepting the interim championship. It will only be done in very, very special circumstances like this one," Mauricio said.
