SugarHill Steward, the head trainer of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, has no idea is his boxer will actually follow through with a pre-fight vow to retire in the aftermath of an upcoming mandatory defense against Dillian Whyte.
Fury will defend the title against Whyte on April 23 at Wembley Stadium. An audience of 100,000 could potentially be present for the fight.
This is not the first time where Fury indicated that he planned to walk away from the ring - only to continue fighting.
Steward would not be surprised if his boxer continued to move forward with his pro run.
"Whatever he says at the time, that's what it is. As you know, everybody in the world changes their mind so it just depends how much you or anybody else puts thought into what he said," Steward told BT Sport.
"Nobody believes Tyson anyway so what difference does it make?"
Fury is a massive favorite to overcome Whyte.
In his last fight, Fury scored a sensational knockout of Deontay Wilder in the eleventh round of their trilogy fight.
Should he win later this month, Fury will be in line to collide with the winner of the upcoming rematch between IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO champion Oleksandr Usyk and former beltholder Anthony Joshua.
Whyte has been out of the ring since March 2021, when he picked up a stoppage of Alexander Povetkin in their rematch.
Steward is not overlooking the challenge of Whyte - explaining that every fighter has a puncher's chance in the heavyweight division.
"Listen, this is the heavyweight division, the most exciting division in boxing," Steward said.
"Everybody has a chance, that's why it's one of the big daddy divisions because anything can happen in the heavyweight division. Everybody has that power, all these huge men are 200+lb."
