Although unbeaten, Shawn Estrada has underachieved as a pro boxer.
After almost two years of inactivity and criticism regarding his weight, Estrada has enlisted the help of a well-known trainer.
Estrada is now working with Henry Ramirez, the well-known Southern California-based trainer told Boxingscene.com last week. Estrada has reportedly been working at the Riverside (CA) gym Ramirez owns for the last three weeks.
Estrada (15-0, 13 KOs) has not fought since knocking out Felix Piedra in the second round in August of 2012.
Aside from representing the United States in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Estrada has dealt with issues in and out of the ring in the last few years. Estrada ran for city council in the Los Angeles suburb of Commerce in 2010, reportedly garnering almost three percent of the vote.
Estrada has had knee issues, which may or may not have led to him having issues with weight before fights. The 29 year old, who competed as a super middleweight in the Olympics and in his first 11 fights as a pro, weighed in at 192 pounds prior to his bout against Terrance Woods in February of 2012. He weighed 185 pounds prior to the Piedra fight.
Ramirez trains notable fighters such as Chris Arreola, Josesito Lopez, and Jonathan Arrellano.
There is no specific date as to when Estrada could return to the ring. Estrada is promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions.
