Former two-time junior welterweight champion, Sharmba Mitchell, tells The Washington Post that he is seriously considering retirement.
This past weekend, undefeated Paul Williams (31-0, 23KOs) battered Mitchell (57-6, 30KOs) on route to a stoppage in the fourth round. Mitchell tasted the canvas four times in the fight. It was the third time Mitchell was stopped in his last five fights.
Mitchell, almost 36-years-old, is not likely to receive another decent payday and has a reached a point in his career where matchmakers will want to use him as testing point for their rising prospects.
"I think I may be done, but don't count me out just yet," Mitchell said. "I have so many other things I can focus on now. Everyone wants to end with a win, but I've had a long, great career as a fighter. Sixty-three fights and only six losses. Boxing has been very good to me."
Mitchell is now focusing on his education outside the ring. The fighter is said to 45 credits shy of earning a degree in business management at the University of Maryland. Mitchell also owns a boxing gym and will help guide the careers of young fighters.
