Colisee de Quebec, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada - WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev (23-0-1, 21KOs) retained his title for the first time, as he demolished Ismayl "The Black Russian" Sillakh (21-2, 17KOs) in two rounds. After a good first round for Sillakh, Kovalev drilled Sillkah early in the second round with a big right hand. Sillkah managed to get to his feet and then Sillkah was dropped very hard with a combination that nearly put him out cold. The fight was stopped immediately by the referee.

Hopkins and Showtime said they weren't interested in Kovalev as an opponent only to approve the world renowned Karo Murat once Kovalev signed to fight Cleverly. I don't blame Hopkins for not wanting to fight him but you make it sound like he was willing to which is not something i remember.
B-Hop tweeted that he would defend his belt at all cost. He's an old school dude, I don't think he has ever vacated a belt.

Publicly Bhop said that of course he was willing to fight his mando if he had to, but Espinoza had already said SHO had no interest in it (maybe so as not to put Bhop in the position of having to turn it down). Since Hopkins is a GBP partner it was pretty clear HBO wouldn't want it either so it was likely not gonna happen.
Kathy Duvas take is that whilst 'Nard was saying 'yeah' it was apparent from early contact that there wasn't really any interest there, whereas Cleverly was already virtually a done deal.

Duckets is literally retarded, don't mind him.
Obviously Kovalev didn't duck Hopkins. He was made Hopkins mandatory and Golden Boy weren't excited about it. Hopkins said he would fight him and would not be stripped of his IBF title. The problem was the process would have gone to a purse bid, then they'd have to figure out a new venue and date. Meanwhile Cleverly had a belt, a date and venue with a good offer to Kovalev. Rather than waiting on the drawn out process they took the Cleverly title fight.
