Scott Fitzgerald’s (10-0, 7 KOs) trainer has told domestic rival and former Team GB stablemate Anthony Fowler (7-0, 6 early) that his charge is ready and willing to fight him to see who will move on to title contention.
Fowler called for a showdown with the 26-year-old after stopping Craig O’Brien in six at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday night so there should be no reason why it cannot be made before the year is out or early in 2019.
The two undefeated fighters seem to be on a collision course and Fitzgerald’s father and trainer, Dave, believes that there would be only one winner should the fight come off. “He was calling out Scott on television after winning his fight,” he said when speaking to Craig Salmon of the Lancashire Evening Post. “He was saying that he wanted to fight Scott and Ted Cheeseman.”
He added: “Scott would love the fight and he was actually a bit worried on Saturday because he watched Fowler's fight and it was looking like he was going to get beaten. But he ended up knocking the lad out, so there's a possibility that fight could happen. I think a lot of people would like to see the fight and it will be two up-and-coming fighters with lots of potential. He's a good boxer is Fowler. He won everything in the amateur ranks as a junior and then went on to win the national senior title.”
In the meantime, Fitzgerald is pencilled in to meet Craig Morris on September 8 at the Birmingham Arena, and his father has warned the Preston-based light-middleweight contender not to take his eye off the ball until that one is done and dusted.
He said: “Morris is a good opponent, but he will be coming to fight and he will leave open big gaps which Scott will exploit.”
