Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer, likes the idea of a welterweight fight between former champion Luis Collazo (35-5, 18KOs) and British star Amir Khan (28-3, 19KOs).
On Wednesday, Collazo's longtime trainer Nirmal Lorick told BoxingScene.com that his fighter is ready, willing, and able to face Khan as soon as possible.
Khan, inactive since last April's tough win over Julio Diaz, was a frontrunner to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 3rd. Last week, Mayweather passed him over and selected Marcos Maidana as the pay-per-view opponent.
Collazo is coming off a very hot win. In January, Collazo did the unexpected by pulling off a one-punch first round knockout of former champion Victor Ortiz at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Khan wants a "credible opponent" at welterweight, and Schaefer is very interested in the idea of a fight with Collazo.
"Luis Collazo had a big win a month or so ago in New York against Victor Ortiz. He's been waiting for these types of opportunities and he let me know as well that he wants Amir Khan. I think it is a fascinating matchup," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.
"Luis is a strong, big welterweight. For Amir to move up and potentially fight someone like Luis Collazo, a natural welterweight, I think it will be an interesting challenge. I haven't talked to Amir about it or his team, or his trainer Vigril, but as a fight fan I can see it being a very entertaining fight and a very interesting fight."
