WBA/IBF junior welterweight champion Amir Khan has the advantage to land a mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2012, according to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. Khan's ability to bring money from the UK and his traveling crowd of British fans is going to place him ahead of the line for a Mayweather payday. Khan returns to action in what is likely going to be his final fight at 140 on December 10, while Mayweather challenges WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz on September 17.
"It's something Mayweather is open to, I know Khan is open to, and Khan has an advantage over other fighters — he actually brings a pot of money. He has a fan base which travels, and he has TV money from England, and Floyd Mayweather is very popular in England, and Floyd has set his mind on conquering the British market as well, so definitely this could be a very, very big fight for sometime in the second half of next year," Schaefer told USA Today.
