Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has advised BoxingScene.com that he fully expects an explosive ending in the upcoming welterweight fight between Keith Thurman (17-0, 16KOs) and Marcos Maidana (31-3, 28KOs).
The HBO televised fight takes place at Cincinnati's U.S. Bank Arena on July 21. WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner takes on Vicente Escobedo in the televised main event.
Thurman is the bigger man, a career welterweight, and fought as high as 152-pounds. Maidana made his welterweight debut in February and he was dominated over ten rounds by Devon Alexander. However, Maidana is now being trained by Robert Garcia and promises to redeem himself in the ring. Thurman, like Alexander, has the very influential Al Haymon as part of his management team.
"That's going to be an interesting fight because Keith Thurman is undefeated, a big puncher. Again, just because somebody doesn't know somebody that doesn't mean they can't fight. And maybe Keith Thurman is not as well known [as Maidana], but I can tell you one thing - Keith Thurman can fight and Keith Thurman can punch. This is going to be another one of those [Humberto] Soto-[Lucas] Matthysee kind of fights - I can guarantee you. Leave the judges at home," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.
