Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, without any prodding, mentioned the possibility of a fight between WBC 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, and WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Since they are two of the most popular fighters from Mexico, it would figure to do well at the box office and on pay-per-view. Schaefer has already spoken with Chavez's promoter, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, about staging the fight in early 2012.
"I actually had a conversation about three weeks ago with (Chavez's promoter) Bob Arum and we were discussing a potential fight between Saul and Chavez Jr. for sometime in the first quarter of next year," Schaefer said.
"And Bob, I think, is going to be coming back from his overseas trip sometime this week and we are planning to sit down in the coming weeks just to have some preliminary discussions. So there's going to be big fights on the horizon for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez."
