New York City - Trainer Abel Sanchez is not overlooking IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31KOs).
Later tonight, Sanchez's star fighter, Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (33-0, 31KOs), will stake his WBA/IBO middleweight titles against Lemieux in a unification showdown from a sold-out Madison Square Garden. Their fight will headline a four-bout HBO Pay-Per-View event.
Some view Lemieux as the most dangerous opponent of Golovkin's career. There is no question about Golovkin's high level of skill or his feared punching power, but some experts wonder if he's capable of taking a big punch.
Even Sanchez wonders what would happen if Golovkin got hurt or even dropped.
"All the great fighters at one time or another were hurt or dropped. My question is in my mind too, that if that happens to us - 'How is he going to react? How are we going to react in the corner for never seeing that [before]?,'" Sanchez told BoxingScene.com.
Even if GGG finds himself swimming in some rocky waters with Lemieux, Sanchez is very confident of a knockout victory in the early rounds. He predicts a showcase performance and he anticipates his fighter will close the show within the first five.
"I'm confident that it's not going to go twelve and it's not going to go very many rounds - because as I've been saying - [Golovkin is] going to go down as the one of the biggest punchers and one of the best middleweights ever and Saturday night will be the first step in proving that again," Sanchez said.
