Abel Sanchez, trainer of IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight champion Genandy 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs), predicts the Mexican fans will turn on Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez - if the Mexican superstar refuses to make a mandatory defense against Golovkin in the fall.
Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to the WBC middleweight belt currently strapped around the waist of Canelo (46-1-1, 32KOs).
Canelo is scheduled to defend his belt on May 7th against Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
On Saturday night, Golovkin knocked out IBF mandatory Dominic Wade in two rounds at The Forum in Los Angeles. He plans to be ringside next month when Canelo defends his belt against Khan.
Should Canelo retain his belt, there is an existing order from the WBC which directs him to fight Golovkin, who holds the interim-title, in the fall. If Canelo refuses, then the WBC will strip him of the title and name Golovkin as the full champion.
Canelo and Golovkin are at odds on the weight. Canelo wants a catch-weight of 155-pounds, where the Mexican superstar fought his last four bouts. He also faces Khan at 155. But Golovkin is standing firm for the full middleweight limit of 160-pounds.
Sanchez is not blaming Canelo for the situation. He places the blame on Golden Boy Promotions, who promote Canelo. He believes Golden Boy, not Canelo, is holding back the fight.
Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya has never hid his feelings on pushing Canelo-Golovkin to a later time period, in order to further monetize the magnitude of the fight.
"I don't think Canelo is scared. He's a warrior. But the business of boxing today supersedes anything … it's Oscar. As a Mexican [who knows] the history of Mexican boxing, they expect something from their hero. They expect something from Canelo. If he doesn't deliver, there'll be repercussions. They'll turn on him … and he'll pay for it one way or another," Sanchez said.
Golovkin agrees with his trainer.
"I'm ready to fight him. I don't think Golden Boy is ready," Golovkin said.
