Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz believes a new star will arrive on July 19th at the Cotai Arena in Macau, when his fighter Jonathan Guzman (16-0, 16KOs) steps up in class to challenge Guillermo Rigondeaux (13-0, 8KOs) for the WBA/WBO super bantamweight titles. In order to make the title fight official, Lewkowicz has submitted a request to secure the approval of the WBO and the WBA.
The fight with Guzman will be the final remaining contractual obligation that Rigondeaux has under his promotional agreement with Top Rank.
"Guzman wanted this fight because he is very confident that he can win. He had 300 fights in the amateurs and he was knocking out his opponents before he was even a professional. As a professional he knocked out all of his opponents. I believe this fight will be no different. Everyone knows that Rigondeaux has one major weakness - his crystal chin. And I expect that Guzman will crack that crystal chin. No opponent has lasted more than six rounds against Guzman's punches," Lewkowicz told BoxingScene.com.
"[Rigondeaux's manager] Gary Hyde is already talking about the promotional offers that he plans to review, but I don't believe there will be too many of them after his fighter is knocked out. It is a shame that the networks in the Dominican Republic do not support boxing as strongly as the other Latin countries, but I believe after this fight they will get on board after Guzman does what other fighters have failed to do - and that's knock Rigondeaux out."
