BoxingScene.com has been advised that an all-Birmingham clash between British and Commonwealth welterweight champion Sam ‘The Savage’ Eggington (16-2, 9 KOs) and Frankie Gavin (22-2, 13 KOs) is “80% done”.
A source close to Eggington’s camp told ‘Scene that they will know for “definite in the morning”. The fight would headline Eddie Hearn’s October 17 card in Birmingham, also featuring world middleweight contender Matthew Macklin and the Yafai brothers Gamal and Kal with the latter contesting the vacant British super flyweight title against Jason Cunningham.
Gavin, himself a former British and Commonwealth champion at welterweight, had hinted at moving back down to 140lbs, was last in action when challenging Kell Brook for the Sheffield star’s IBF world welterweight title back in May. Brook’s size and power proved too much for Gavin with the fight being called off in the sixth round.
Eggington, something of a rough diamond that is being polished fight by fight, has had a 2015 to remember with three wins out of three after adding the vacant British strap to his Commonwealth and WBC International silver honours when out-fighting and outclassing Glenn Foot last month, a bout that was described by some as a 50-50.
Our source told ‘Scene: “There’s no fuss with us, Sam just wants to fight.” And added, “We will be chasing [European champion] Gianluca Branco if we win.”
A press conference is scheduled for 12pm tomorrow in Birmingham when full details of the show will be announced.
