Promoter Andrei Ryabisnky of World of Boxing has been a huge critic of Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev outcome from two weeks ago at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Ward, who was knocked down in the second round, won a close twelve round unanimous decision over Kovalev to capture the IBF, WBA, WBO light heavyweight world titles. The three judges scored it 114-113.
The decision was deemed as being controversial by a lot of experts, with the majority of them scoring the contest for Kovalev.
Ryabinsky is staging most of the major boxing events in Russia. This Saturday's cruiserweight title fight in Moscow, between Denis Lebedev and Murat Gassiev, is highly anticipated by the hardcore fans of the sport. And then on December 17th he promotes another event in Russia where heavyweights Alexander Povetkin and Bermane Stiverne collide in a WBC final eliminator.
The Russian promoter is hoping to stage more fights in the future overseas, including the United States, but he's now a little leery of going in that direction after watching what happened in the fight between Ward and Kovalev.
"I have plans to stage more fights abroad, because that is very important for us," said Ryabinsky. "The only thing that puts a strain on that, is the question of the officiating in America in the light of recent events. Everybody saw the fight between Sergei Kovalev and Andre Ward, and they saw the judging. Without making a single comment over here, the entire world knows what happened. I don't know how Ward feels [about what happened], but he smiles a lot. I would be ashamed if I was in his place."
